On the Quasi-Periodic Nature of Magnetopause Flux Transfer Events

چکیده

The recurrence rate of flux transfer events (FTEs) observed near the dayside magnetopause is discussed. A survey of magnetopause observations by the ISEE satellites hows that the distribution of the intervals between FTE signatures has a mode value of 3 min, but is highly skewed, having upper and lower decile values of 1.5 min and 18.5 min, respectively. The mean value is found to be 8 min, consistent with previous surveys of magnetopause data. The recurrence of quasi-periodic events in the dayside auroral ionosphere is frequently used as evidence for an association with magnetopause FTEs, and the distribution of their repetition intervals should be matched to that presented here if such an association is to be confirmed. A survey of 1 year's 15-s data on the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) suggests that the derived distribution could arise from fluctuations in the IMF B z component, rather than from a natural oscillation frequency of the magnetosphere-ionosphere system.

Survival of flux transfer event (FTE) flux ropes far along the tail magnetopause

[1] During intervals of southward IMF, magnetic reconnection can result in the formation of flux transfer events (FTEs) on the dayside magnetopause which travel along the magnetopause in the anti-sunward direction. Of particular interest is their fate and the role they play transporting solar wind plasma into the magnetosphere. We present the discovery of FTEs far along the distant tail magneto...

First simultaneous observations of flux transfer events at the high-latitude magnetopause by the Cluster spacecraft and pulsed radar signatures in the conjugate ionosphere by the CUTLASS and EISCAT radars

Cluster magnetic field data are studied during an outbound pass through the post-noon high-latitude magnetopause region on 14 February 2001. The onset of several minute perturbations in the magnetospheric field was observed in conjunction with a southward turn of the interplanetary magnetic field observed upstream by the ACE spacecraft and lagged to the subsolar magnetopause. These perturbation...

Multiple flux rope events at the magnetopause observations by TC - 1 on 18 March 2004

From 23:10 to 23:50 UT on 18 March 2004, the Double Star TC-1 spacecraft detected eight flux ropes at the outbound crossing of the southern dawnside magnetopause. A notable guide field existed inside all ropes. In the mean time the Cluster spacecraft were staying in the magnetosheath and found that the events occurred under the condition of southward IMF Bz and dominant negative IMF By . There ...

Flux transfer events on the high-latitude magnetopause: Interball-1 observations

We present case and statistical studies of flux transfer events (FTEs) observed by Interball-1 on the highlatitude magnetopause. The case studies provide observations of FTEs in the cusp during periods of southward interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) orientation and on the magnetopause poleward of the cusp during periods of strongly northward IMF orientation. We interpret the former in terms of...

Thermal Field Around a Circular Cylinder with Periodic Vortex Shedding

A numerical study is carried out to investigate the laminar forced convection heat transfer from a circular cylinder. The fluid is assumed to be incompressible, the Reynolds number ranged from 0.1 to 1000, and the Prandtl number was equal to 0.7. The range of study includes heat transfer in creeping flow (Re40). The equations were discretized by a control-volume-based finite difference techniqu...
